Chocolate Apples with Popping Candy

These chocolate apples are such a simple treat to make for the kids, and they take next to no time to do. Bonus is the main ingredient is fruit! OK it’s covered in chocolate and sugary stuff, but it’s fruit never the less.

I made these for the kids over Guy Fawkes weekend, but obviously they can be enjoyed anytime of the year. As it was Fireworks weekend, we decided to use popping candy and sugar stars for decoration. You can obviously use any decorations you like, from sugar sprinkles to mini smarties or even chocolate chips.

This is a recipe that you can get the kids involved in, and Isla was keen to help me. The only hot part is melting the chocolate over a pan of water which I did, and it can be a little tricky covering the apples in chocolate so I did that as well.

What You Will Need

  • Apples
  • Chocolate of your choice
  • Sprinkles of your choice
  • Cake pop sticks


How You Make Them

  1. Twist off the stems off the apples, and push through a cake pop stick. Pop the apples in the fridge.  The chocolate covers the apples better if they are cold.  I choose Braeburn apples, but you really could choose any variety.
  2. Melt your chocolate. The best way to do this is in a bowl over a pan of boiling water.  You can of course do it in the microwave. I decided not to use the microwave as I always end up burning it! I used Dairy Milk chocolate because it’s a favourite, but you can use any chocolate.  Just be warned, white chocolate from experience is harder to work with.  I used 2 bars of 200g Dairy Milk which covered 7 apples generously.
  3. Once the chocolate is melted, cover the apples by dipping them into the chocolate and twisting them to try and get an even coverage.
  4. Then dip the chocolate covered apples in a bowl of sprinkles. I mixed my popping candy and sugar star sprinkles in a bowl, but as I said before you really can use any sprinkles you want to.
  5. You need to allow the apples to dry.  The best way to do this is to put the sticks into a thick piece of polystyrene so they dry upwards.  This gives a better cosmetic result, but isn’t always easy or practical.  The other option is to put them upside down on a piece of greaseproof paper on a baking sheet, and pop them into the fridge to set.
  6. When the chocolate has set, they are ready to enjoy!
