This little craft was prompted again by one of our local horticultural shows. There was a class for a decorated wooden spoon for children aged between 5-7 years.  We have decorated wooden spoons in the past, and the kids loved it, so Isla was really keen to enter.  When I asked her what animal she wanted to turn her wooden spoon into, she of course said a Flamingo! Or mingo as she calls them, her favourite animal (probably because they’re pink!). So together we crafted this little wooden spoon flamingo.

How to Make a Wooden Spoon Flamingo

This is a simple craft that you can do with the kids, with just very basic craft supplies. For younger children, you may need more parental input.  I did the cutting out for Isla, but otherwise gave her free reign.

You Will Need

• Wooden Spoon
• Paint and Paintbrushes
• Pink Coloured Felt
• Some Card
• Yellow Coloured felt
• A Googley Eye
• Gloopey Glue
• Pink and Purple Feathers
• Black Felt Tip Pen

How You Make It

1. First Isla painted her wooden spoon.  She used pink paint on the actual spoon head, and yellow paint on the spoon handle to represent the flamingo’s leg.  Once it was dry, we turned it over and she painted the other side.

   

   

2. Whilst the spoon was drying, we went on and made the flamingo’s head.  I cut out a flamingo head and neck shape from a piece of pink felt.  Isla then glued this to a piece of card.

   

   

3. We cut a small triangle of yellow felt out for the beak and Isla glued this onto the head along with a googley eye.  When the glue was dry I cut the flamingo head and neck out of the card.
4. Using gloopey glue, I glued the head piece onto the wooden spoon. Isla then covered the spoon head with gloopey glue and stuck loads of pink and purple feathers onto it that she had picked out of her feather collection.

   

   

5. As a finishing touch, Isla coloured in the tip of the beak with a black felt tip pen.

   

   

That’s it! This is really simple, but I think it looks really effective, and Isla was pleased with her wooden spoon flamingo.

She went ahead and entered he wooden spoon flamingo into the local horticultural show, and won! Not only that but it contributed to her getting the most points in the children classes, so she ended up getting a certificate and trophy too!

I have a few spare wooden spoons, so we will be thinking up more ways to decorate them in the future!

You can pick up googley eyes, feathers and wooden spoons from your local craft shop or even supermarket! For convenience, I tend to get most of my supplies from Amazon.
