We had great fun recently at our local National Trust woodland doing this Summer Woodland Scavenger Hunt. I’ve included it as a FREE printable in this post, so if you want to give it a go yourself you can simply print one off and you’re all set.
For our first day out out for a long time we headed to Hatfield Forest which is owned by the National Trust. For only £6 for parking (or free if you’re National Trust members like us), it’s a bit of a bargain day out.
We have always had a great time there, and always found plenty to do. However, with lockdown restrictions only recently being lifted, I wasn’t sure if it would all be open and accessible and if there would be enough to fill our day.
Following the success of our Autumn Scavenger Hunt a few years ago, I thought I would design a Summer one for the kids to do whilst we were there and see what we could spot.
To be fair, lots of things on this scavenger hunt you will find during other seasons. However, during the Summer months things like Ladybirds, Bees and Butterflies are in abundance and you’ll be surprised how many you will spot.
Our Summer Woodland Scavenger Hunt
As it turned out we found lots of things to do. We built dens, made pretend campires and toasted pretend marshmallows, climbed trees, reinacted Little Red Riding Hood and The Billy Goats Gruff and had a picnic as well as doing our Summer Woodland Scavenger hunt whilst we wandered around the woodlands.
The kids are getting really good at spotting different types of tree now, and could easily distinguish between Oak and Horse Chestnut trees. However if you have younger children, you might want to simplify things by just getting them to find a green leaf or brown leaf.
We also saw loads of different butterflies. I tried to take lots of pictures of them but they were just so busy flying around!
Our scavenger hunt just added an extra element to the day. The kids love seeing if they could tick everything off the list, and I am now working on a Seaside and Rockpool scavenger hunts for when we go away to Norfolk next week.
Pin It For Later!
Do your kids love doing scavenger hunts as much as mine do?
