20 Elf on the Shelf Ideas

So this year we have decided to join in the madness that is ‘Elf on the Shelf’.  The children have read the book that came with our Elf, so hopefully they understand ‘the rules’. They have named him ‘Buddy’. Very original I know, but we all love the film ‘Elf’ so I suppose it was inevitable.

I love encouraging my children’s imagination, so you may think it’s strange that we have waited this long to join in with this popular tradition.  Previous years I have seen others’ efforts and wished we had joined in, but in truth before now I just haven’t had the time. The thought of having to create 25 unique ‘elf’ scenarios during an already busy and stressful festive period was just too much.

This year however, I feel ready to embark on a new family tradition for us.  The kids have listened to the story book, that magical appeared today, and hopefully are tucked up in bed anticipating the arrival of Buddy.

On his arrival night he will be unimaginatively just presenting the kids with their advent calendars in the morning. However, for the next 24 nights I hope to come up with some more creative ideas.

I love looking at other peoples efforts, some original, others not so. Most though made me smile, and some made me laugh out loud.  So as a beginner elfer, I thought I would ask my friends and fellow bloggers for some ideas. Here are 20 of their Elf on the shelf scenarios.

Elf playing with the children toys

I love it when the elf interacts with the other toys in the house, either playing boards games, having play fights, riding trains or even the toys turning on each other.

This little elf wanted a ride on the toy train, I will definitely be doing this this year!

This elf just wanted to hang with the girls and have a tea party.

This elf picked a fight with a storm trooper. It’s not going to end well.

Sometimes the toys turn on the newcomer. Elf is being kept hostage, and Superman is on his way to rescue him.  Love this!

Elf messing with the Christmas decorations

There are lots of elves getting into the Christmas trees and getting up to no good.  I particularly like this one where he has hung Mum & Dads undies in the tree. Not sure my undies are up to being immortalised in an ‘Elfie’ but I like the idea.

Or here is a naughty elf ‘mummifying’ a Santa.

Elf having some ‘Me’ time

Elf like all of us needs to have some quality time out.  Like movie night, complete with popcorn.

Toasting marshamallows over a tea light.  I think I might use an LED one though, with cats and children around it’s probably safer in my house!

Or just spending some quiet time reading a book (love the reading glasses!)

This Elf spa really took some thought, elf even has mini cucumber slices over his eyes, a cocktail on the side whilst he relaxes in a jelly bath.

Elf just getting up to mischeif

By far my favourite ‘Elf on the shelf’ ideas are when the elf is just getting up to pure mischief! I think it’s in these scenarios that us parents can really let our imaginations run riot.

The classic Snow angel.  This is with flour, I love that it’s on a board to limit the mess, girl after my own heart.

This little elf wanted to be the one on the cereal packet.

I like the idea that even Santa’s elves can be a bit naughty now and then.  Here is one little elf ‘borrowing’ the children’s pocket money whilst they sleep. Love the eye mask and hat disguise.

There are quite a few ideas of elf in the fridge.  I have read some where he adds food colouring to the milk.  Not sure I fancy that, but this is a nice comprimise.

I love this! I think it’s a great idea and definitely one I’m pinching.

Naughty elves also like to do drawing, but not always where they are supposed too.  I just hope that pen wipes off!

Elf getting imagintive

This elf just wanted to do a little bit of baking, and who doesn’t love a bit of late night baking.

I love this Elf zip wire, that is serious dedication.

I have read about the Skittle rainbow thing, and seen it on social media.  I have yet to try it, but what a genius way of introducing it to your little ones by getting your elf to.  I wonder what other magic tricks we could introduce in this way?

So who knows what scenarios our little Buddy is going to get up to over the next 24 nights, and who knows if we will remember every night to do something!  What I do know is that we are going to have a lot of fun doing it.

Are you doing elf on the shelf this year? What are your favourite elf scenarios?  Whatever you do enjoy the run up to Christmas,
