Slow Cooker Moroccan Inspired Meatball Recipe

Moroccan Inspired Meatballs

This is a recipe I came up with to try and get my children eating more red meat, whilst introducing some new flavours to them. This Moroccan inspired meatball recipe is for soft succulent lamb meatballs in a rich aromatic sauce which has a perfect blend of sweetness and spice. I’ve included a FREE printable recipe card for you at the end in case you want to try it yourself.

My little girl is a fussy eater, she never used to be, but she is now, and her latest problem is eating things that are brown. Obviously not chocolate, that would be silly! But anything slightly brown coloured and we have a stand off.  This can be quite difficult when trying to introduce more red meat into the kid’s diets.

Red meat provides a range of important nutrients, which are often low in toddlers and children, including iron, zinc, B vitamins, selenium and potassium. Dr Emma Derbyshire, a public health nutritionist and mother, says: “Including a small portion of red meat in the diet a few times a week after weaning can help to bridge nutrient gaps and so help to maintain good health through childhood and beyond.”

We took part in BritMums #HealthyRedMeat challenge sponsored by the Meat Advisory Panel, to help promote red meat in the diets of children.  The challenge was to come up with a healthy recipe using lean red meat for the family that was quick, easy, affordable and of course one the children would eat!

Isla always tends to favour sweeter flavours than savoury, and she also has a thing against tomatoes at the moment.  So I came up with this twist on a classic meatball recipe. We had it midweek, so it needed to be super quick.  I actually prepared the meatballs the night before, and chucked everything in the slow cooker pot ready for the morning.  In the morning it was just a case of getting it out of the fridge and switching on the pot. At dinner time, I just quickly prepared some veg and cous cous to go with and it was done.  I must say the sauce was delicious, subtly sweet with aromatic flavours, and the meatballs were soft and melted in your mouth.

Ingredients:

  • 500g lean lamb mince
  • 1 1/2 tbsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbsp tumeric
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 500g carton of passata
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 4 oz of chopped dried apricots
  • 3 oz Sultanas
  • 1 pint of lamb or beef stock
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Seasoning

How You Make Them:

  1. Add the paprika, ground ginger, turmeric and cinnamon to a bowl and mix well. Put half of the spice mixture direct into your slow cooker pot and mix the other half well with your lamb mince.  I found using my hands for this was the easiest way to do it.
  2. Again using your hands form small meatballs, and place into the slow cooker pot.
  3. Add all the other ingredients to the pot, and turn on to a low for 6-8 hours, season to taste.

I served the kid’s up with some plain cous cous and veggies.  Me and James had ours with some Moroccan style cous cous, salad and a little greek yoghurt.

Isla reluctantly ate her meatballs, but she did eat them all just leaving a small amount the sauce. Considering they were brown in a brown sauce I think it’s a win.   She even admitted at the end that she did kind of like the taste and has asked to have them again next week. Oliver tucked into his no problem, and even requested more sauce for his veggies.

What do you think of my Moroccan inspired meatball recipe? Do you eat a lot of red meat in your family meals? or do you have fussy kiddos like mine that have a problem with eating ‘brown’ food?
