Sometimes My Kids Irritate Me!

Kids irritate me

OK, so I’m pretty sure this isn’t a groundbreaking statement and that I’m not alone.  We all know children can be irritating sometimes, and they know how to push your buttons. Recently however I’ve realised that there are a few things my kids do, or don’t do, that really irritate me! You know, properly wind me up to the point of near explosion!

I love my kids, and on the whole they are fairly well behaved.  However they seem to have developed a few behaviours that really grate on me.  I suspect that these traits may be fairly common amongst children of their age, but it literally drives me potty!  So here is a list of things my kids do that really wind me up.

They Can’t Stay Still

Literally they can not sit or lie or do anything still for more than 5 minutes, unless they are asleep.  It’s a romantic idea of mine to snuggle up on a sofa watching a  movie under a blanket. The reality is they’re fidgeting, shifting back and forth, poking me with their little bony elbows, climbing all over me and fighting over said blanket.  Cuddles in bed first thing in the morning is much the same, a nice idea at best, but after 5 minutes its Armageddon.  Even eating dinner and they’re rocking back and forth on their chairs, or lolling over the table.  Why cant they just stay still! I think the term ants in their pants was invented for my two!

They are Obsessed with Body Parts

Particularly bellies at the moment, and my belly specifically.  Oliver seems to particularly enjoy pulling up his top and shouting BEEELLLLLLY, he also loves pulling up my top and shouting the same.  This behaviour is also not confined to the privacy of our house. Tesco, the doctor’s surgery and even the school playground is fair game.  I try and teach my kids body confidence, but to be honest i’m not that keen on my belly, and having it unwillingly exposed in public places whilst my children shout BEEEELLLLLLY to bring attention to it is starting to get quite annoying.  They think it’s hillarious, and have started to migrate to pointing at strangers who might be carrying a little extra around the midrife, screaming BEEELLLLLY at them. OMG what am I raising!

They Cant Talk at a Normal Volume

They just haven’t mastered the art of talking at a normal volume. Shouting starts the minute they wake up, and conversations between the kids when they are sitting next to each other is deafening. This is particularly irritating when one or both announce that they have had a poo, I swear the neighbours are aware of every bowel movement my children make!  It also becomes an annoyance when out in public.  Several times in a busy supermarket, you can only hear my kids, no-one elses, just mine!  The most irritating was when I had the great idea of taking Oliver to Isla’s first parent assembly at school.  I told him to be as quiet as a mouse.  The assembly proceeded and he continually made a SQUEAK noise at the top of his voice.  The other parents pretended to be amused, but I was dying inside.

They Don’t Walk, They Stomp

This one particularly grates on me in the morning. There is only a short distance from their bedrooms to ours, but it sounds like a heard of elephants is heading our way.  Our tiny little people seem to be so heavy footed, that everyday I think they might end up putting a foot through the floor boards!  Going up the stairs is worse.  The whole house seems to vibrate, and  one day I swear i’m going to find all our pictures coming off the walls.

They Wont Try Anything New

In this I am mainly referring to food.  Anything slightly out of the ordinary, and the plate gets pushed away and the tears start.  Isla in particular wont entertain anything new, and it really irritates me. I thought as she got older, I could convince her just to try.  She seemed keen, but then no, tears switched on and there is no persuading her.  I spend a lot of time with them in the kitchen, and they love helping me prepare and cook food, but the minute it comes to them eating it! It does seem that the more time and energy I put into preparing food, the more likely they are to point blank refuse it.  Frustrating? are you kidding me!!

So there you have it, a few things that really irritate me about my gorgeous little cherubs. Nothing horrendous, and hopefully traits that will change as they get older.  One things for sure, i’m certain they will continue to know how to push my buttons and wind me up something chronic!

What things irritate you about your kids? are there things that really wind you up? or am I expecting to much from my kids?

  1. Funny you should say that my daughter was a right little pain! It was some time ago but when she was a teenager her room was a disgrace. I took to putting the black sacks in her bedroom as I told her ‘that if she wanted her room as a dustbin I might aswell use it as one’ however the smell waffling into the Hall soon made me ending up(to my annoyance) cleaning her room for her.-didn’t I Kerry

  2. Haha oh no! They sound like a bundle of fun 😉 I was the same though, I never used to try anything new (I’m sure I drove my mum up the wall!) – and if it was “healthy” you could count it out. I’m a bit better now haha!
It winds me up when I *know* that I’ve put enough on the kids plates that they can eat, and they still leave half of it! Hate wasting food!
Great post though, did make me chuckle! #KCACOLS
