We are taking part in British Military Fitness’ #SpringIntoAction campaign to encourage children to get outside and play and get muddy this Easter! With the official first day of Spring tomorrow (20th March), the sun is starting to shine more, flowers are popping up and there is no better time to get the kids outdoors enjoying the fresh air.
#SpringintoAction Get Outdoors and Get Muddy!
So as part of the #SpringintoAction campaign, this week we have been having fun outdoors. The children love being outside and playing, and there are so many benefits to playing in the fresh air rather than sitting in front of the TV!
My kids love being outside, it’s when they are at their happiest, especially if there is mud involved (Oliver loves nothing more than getting muddy!), and if the children are happy then I am happy. There are obvious health benefits from being active outside in the fresh air, but aside from that it also teaches children about nature, how things grow and is great to encourage imaginative play which is key for their development.
So this is what we have been up to this week.
Clare Country Park
We spent an afternoon at a local country park. Other than the parking it was free, and provided hours of entertainment. We walked along the river and the kids fed the ducks. We made our duck food by mixing sweetcorn, peas and oats which is much healthier duck food than bread. The ducks were enjoying it so much that 2 swans decided to pop by for some food!
As we walked along the river the kids were looking for sticks and feathers, and bird spotting in the trees. The park had various wooden information signs illustrating what wildlife to look out for. Isla was desperate to spot a Woody woodpecker, but we didn’t see one this time.
Then we found a muddy puddle, this tiny bit of muddy water kept them amused for ages. They were taking run ups and jumping, and seeing how high they could jump.
Needless to say it was quite messy, but the kids were having a great time as you can see from the photos.
After getting cleaned up we had our little picnic, you can’t beat eating outdoors and the kids always seem to eat better. I even got them trying hummus and cream cheese with vegetable sticks which they really enjoyed.
After walking around a bit more, we started to make our way home. Both kiddies were asleep within minutes of getting in the car. All the fresh air and running around had really worn them out.
Today we made our way to Hatfield Forest to enjoy some more family outdoor fun, and this time Daddy could come too and we meet my brother and my nephew Kieran there. There were plenty of areas suitable for making dens, and some half built ones. The kids had fun gathering sticks and playing in them, pretending they were built by fairies.
A trip to the forest wouldn’t be complete without climbing trees, the boys definitely were more keen than the girls. Oliver did need a helping hand, but he loved joining in with the big boys!
Of course no trip outside would be complete without getting muddy! There was plenty of mud for Oliver to play in, a bit more than he bargained for when he slipped over and landed bottom first, but it didn’t seem to dampen his spirits.
We all had a fantastic day, great entertainment for all the family and we only had to pay for parking again!
So you see how much fun with have had this week, so why don’t you get the kids out and join in with the #SpringIntoAction campaign and get outdoors and get muddy!
